Have you ever felt unqualified to be used by God? Maybe you have looked at your past mistakes, current struggles, or lack of resources and thought, “Surely, God can not use someone like me.” If you have ever wrestled with feelings of inadequacy, you are not alone.
Here is the truth: God has a history of recruiting people from the pit, not the pedestal. In fact, some of the most influential figures in the Bible were called by God in the middle of their brokenness, not their perfection.
God’s Pattern: Calling the Unlikely
- Joseph – From the Pit to the Palace
Joseph’s story began with betrayal. Thrown into a literal pit by his brothers and sold into slavery, he was later wrongfully imprisoned. But God used those dark moments to shape Joseph into a leader who would save nations. What others saw as defeat, God saw as preparation. - Moses – From Hiding to Leadership
Moses was a fugitive. He hid in the wilderness after killing a man in anger. He doubted his ability to speak and questioned God’s call. Yet, God used this insecure and reluctant man to deliver an entire nation from bondage. - Rahab – From Prostitute to Protector
Rahab was a woman with a questionable past. Yet, she had the courage to hide Israelite spies and help God’s people. Her faith not only spared her family but also earned her a place in the lineage of Jesus Christ. - David – From the Field to the Throne
David was the overlooked shepherd boy. He was young, inexperienced, and unproven. Even after being anointed, he faced rejection and spent years running for his life. Yet, God called him a man after His own heart and made him king. - Paul – From Persecutor to Preacher
Paul actively persecuted Christians until he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. God did not discard him because of his past. Instead, He transformed Paul into one of the most influential apostles.
Why Does God Choose the Broken?
God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called. Those who have been in the pit often have the humility, compassion, and reliance on God that others may lack. When we are at our lowest, we are often more receptive to God’s voice and direction.
In the pit, we learn to trust God because we have no other option. We develop resilience and empathy. Our faith is increased. When we rise, we can point others to the One who lifted us up.
Your Pit is Not Your End
If you are in a season of brokenness, rejection, or uncertainty, do not count yourself out. God is not looking for perfect people. God is looking for available people. He can take your scars, mistakes, missteps, and fears and turn them into testimonies of His grace and power.
So, the next time you feel unqualified, remember this: God has always used the unlikely to accomplish the impossible. His grace rewrites every story from the pit to the pedestal.
God’s recruitment process does not require you to have it all together. He just needs your yes. No matter where you are right now—whether you are in a pit of despair or regret—God sees beyond your circumstances. He sees your potential.
Say yes to His call and watch how He turns your pit into a platform.
Broken but useable,
